TRIBUTES TO CORRIE CHARACTERS
|
|
On this page, you will find tributes to characters
and cast of Coronation Street
from November 1999.
There are some characters that I will not miss at all,
I said not a bit,
and those characters will not be featured here.

Mike Baldwin
Johnny Briggs
I started watching Corrie in 1994, so I've only seen Mike in the last half of his years on the Street. I found his acting during the time of Alma's passing and his battle with Altzheimer's to be absolutely remarkable.
What a brilliant ending to this character's storyline - what a cruel stroke of fate.

Simon Barlow
Unknown Baby
|
The last we saw of baby Simon was at the airport when crazed mommy, Lucy Barlow, was taking him out of his father's arms, yes, Peter Barlow's, and whisking him off to sunny Australia. I was not disappointed to see the back side of Lucy and just a bit less distraught when Peter then "took the taxi" off the set.
I am looking forward to the day that the Corrie writers bring little Simon back as a dark-haired and muscular surfing lad, with a lovely Australian accent and an eye for romance.
I'm staying tuned.

Susan Barlow
Joanna Foster
|
I enjoyed everything about this talented actress and was sorely disappointed to see this character killed in a car crash. What a breath of fresh air! Joanna Foster is a well-known actress, writer, and singer and brought such vitality to Coronation Street. There is so much that could have been done with this character!
At least, the producers have left us with Adam - now there's an interesting twist when a 12-year old son punches his Dad in the face upon introductions.

Natalie Barnes
Denise Welch
|
MOH comments that Denise Welch is a solid actress who carried a tough character true to the end. She was continually misunderstood and will be missed. He feels that she protrayed the lifestyle of the day where a person suffers through his/her hardships and then gets on with life. MOH hopes to see her back again.
I, however, never warmed to this character and felt that she had been miscast. I felt that this actress was being squeezed into a very limiting role when she was capable of doing much more...so in the end, I wasn't comfortable watching Natalie Barnes. Let's see her back in a different light! |

Paul Clayton
Tom Hudson
|
Well, Paul has "taken the taxi" off the set of Corrie, on the run from the law, but still in Jack's good books. Such a handsome young man, he was quite a character when he first arrived on the Street. However, as the scripts became more demanding, he appeared to be struggling with the storyline, and in the end, left without much fuss.
I do think this actor has potential and I hope to see him return to the Street once his acting has matured. Go on, Paul, have a few years of adventure...but don't forget dear old Jack. He'll be missing you.

Vera Duckworth
Liz Dawn
We knew this day was coming, but I won't soon forget the moment when I realized "this was it." Vera had just told Jack that she loved him and that she had loved no one else and I moved to the edge of my chair. I didn't have time to run for the box of kleenex, however, but I was so glad I was there to watch as Vera slipped away into Corrie history.
And then Jack? Well, Jack broke our hearts as he cried because Vera had been the first to go. What an emotional week followed!
Vera survived everything life threw at her and proved her royal line once and for all.

Fred Elliott
John Savident
|
Fred Elliott was always my favourite character; he brought charisma and vulnerability to the script. He was a role model for everyone who simply does the very best with what they've been given. In fact, he was always a Square Dealer.
I am quite angry with the writers of the show that after everything Fred has been through and he has been around the block many times, his death was unbecoming to a gentleman of his statue. They should have given him the wedding of his and Bev's dream and days of marital bliss. I wanted them to have their cottage in the country; it makes me sad that the writers treated him so badly.

Frisky the Cat
|
Thanks to the DownEast Streeters of Halifax for this photo.
Frisky died on November 15, 2000.
The 17-year-old tomcat, Frisky, was selected in 1990 from 5,000 hopefuls and appeared at the opening of more than 1,000 episodes. Frisky earned thousands of pounds for animal and children's charities by making personal appearances but was only paid a one-time fee of £200.
I'm including Frisky because he was very much part of the Coronation Street cast and a favourite of my cat, Lucky.

Elizabeth Bradley

and this was Maud Grimes |
|
and THIS was Maud Grimes:

Elizabeth Bradley, who played Maud Grimes, passed away after suffering a stroke while on holiday in the south of France.
Elizabeth had played wheelchair-bound Maud from 1993 until last year and wasn't she a memorable character! I've enjoyed watching her and Ashley together; they made a remarkable team. And won't we miss those hats.

Alma Halliwell
Amanda Barrie
Even though we knew this was coming, it was still very difficult to watch. Firstly, because for some of us, this was very close to home - losing a best friend to cancer.
Secondly, we lost a good friend and a classy lady in Alma. Her character was a treasure on the Street and it's not only Audrey who is going to miss her.
It was such a tender moment when Mike told her how much he had loved her. And yes Audrey, I think Alma knew you were there.

Maxine Heavey
Tracy Shaw
|
I remember when Maxine first entered Fiona's shop and my heavens, but it's been quite a roller coaster ride since then. There were certainly times when I wanted to shake her by the shoulders and yell "Maaxxeeene - don't!!!"
One of the best characters to come out of the Maxine storyline and one of the best on the show today is that of her mom, played by Prunella Gee.

Richard Hillman
Brian Capron
The more I saw of Richard, the more I appreciated the depth of Capron's acting skills, even when it was difficult to watch what he was doing. He could change his expression in a split second from a loving neighbour/husband/step-dad to a cold-blooded psychopath.
To the very end, we knew that he believed every word he said.
This was a well-written and dramatic storyline that had me on the edge of my seat. What a thrill!

Ray Langton
Neville Buswell
|
I only started watching Corrie in the early 90's, so I didn't see the early life of Ray.
I have read some of the storylines and yes, he appears to have been more than a bit of a "wide boy." |
|
But when he returned to say his good-byes to the Street, he captured my heart. His acting was superb
and the writing, well, what can we say about his impact on the Barlows? Great fun and tragedy all
at the same time.
But that's what we truly love about Corrie, isn't it?

Bet Lynch
Julie Goodyear
I put off adding Bet to this list as I was secretly hoping she'd return to WTN in the afternoons. I was not prepared for how much I would enjoy this character.
What a powerhouse! Not only did she have the best lines on the show, she had smarts and compassion. I just loved watching her behind the bar in the Rovers and especially in storylines with Raquel. And those outfits - weren't they wonderful!
I'm hearing rumours about this character returning to Coronation Street!

Karen McDonald
Suranne Jones
|
Well, Karen left in the taxi today, in the snow, at Christmas and as Clare and Ashley were leaving on their honeymoon. She had some difficult story lines, Karen did, and Suranne always handled them well. As Tracey said: "there's no doubt that she loved Steve."
I'll never forget when she and Steve were decorating their new flat and she said that she needed a bookcase, not to hold books she was reading, but because all the footballers had them.

Judy Mallett
Gaynor Faye
Just like Rita, I wondered if I shouldn't "close up shop" today in honour of Judy.
Instead, I'd like to say thank you to the writers of Coronation Street for the excellent script writing this week and to the actors for their portrayals.
A huge thank you must go to Gaynor Faye for her character of Judy!

Judy Mallett will be missed.

Dan Mason
Matthew Crompton
|
Well, what can you say when once again the producers of our absolutely favourite show eliminates a wonderful actor? I really enjoyed
the Mason father and son team and am sorry to see Dan leave the show as well. And to have him drive off with Kelly chasing him was in
poor humour.
I just don't undertand it.

Edna Miller
Joan Kempson
What a character! Edna's visit to Coronation Street was too short. Even if she had been one of those cast members who stop in once in awhile to drop jewels of lines, that would have been enough.
But what an ending! To have her "wake up dead" in Dougie's bed was just a precious bit of humour. I'll miss Edna and I hope to see this actress in other shows on other channels. Thanks for the laughs!

Phyllis Pearce
Jill Summers
|
Again, this is another character that draws me to WTN in the afternoon. Isn't she wonderful! She first appeared in 1982 and left the show fifteen years later due to illness. And sad to report, Jill Summers passed away in 1997.
But thanks to the marvel of television, at the moment, she is Des Barnes' housekeeper and has some of the best one-liners of the show. When she leans over the couch, sees a sleeping Andy MacDonald and wishes she was 20 years, well, maybe 30 years younger, we are all grinning with her. What a talent!

Jez Quigley
Lee Boardman
|
Well, what can one say about the acting of Lee Boardman that hasn't already been said? This is one character that could be completely repulsive (will you ever forget his sniffing Natalie's face?) and yet vulnerable enough to think he could make Leanne love him. Good riddance Jez but I know we will be seeing a lot more of Lee Boardman. Jez has been an extraordinay character portrayed by an exceptional actor!

Samir Rachid
Al Nedjari
One of the reasons I began to watch WTN was to see this character, as I had heard so many references to him. I was skeptical that the writers could make this character and this storyline believable, but they did. Samir developed into an interesting and personable young man. Although he was relatively shortlived, Samir had a tremendous impact on Deirdre's life.
Theirs was a touching and intimate romance and now I can understand Deirdre's hesitation in accepting Ken's offer of remarriage.

Archie Shuttleworth
Roy Hudd
|
Thanks to the Corrie writers who have left it open for Archie to return one day. When he asked Audrey to marry him, I was on my feet yelling "say yes!" "say yes!"...but as we know, Audrey did not. Wouldn't they have made a wonderful couple?
Archie was a quiet, compassionate gentleman, who added so much depth and humour to his storylines. Archie - it just won't be same without you.

YOU GO GIRL!!
Okay, so Candice wasn't the smartest girl on the street
and she could be really self-centered, but there was
just something about this character, well,
you couldn't help routing for her.
And she left with Status Quo! Wow, let's hope
she does text Sarah and lets us know
how the world tour goes.

Really miss him.

Percy Sugden
Bill Waddington
I was saddened to hear today of the death of Bill Waddington, who played the character of Percy Sugden from August 22, 1983 to October 20, 1997.
One of my first memories as a regular viewer was of Phyllis and Percy. Wasn't that a great storyline!
If you are watching WTN in the afternoons, then you are enjoying these two once again.

|
What a brutal week on Corrie! We have lost 3 excellent actors in one swoop, with word that more are leaving soon. Harry, who was my personal favourite and who of you could deny the chemistry between Harry and Liz, Jerry, a passionate family man and a good friend to 'R Eileen, and Vernon, who was Liz's "9 out of 10" and singer extraordinaire of "Don't You Fall into the Mason's Arms". I have to say that it was almost too much to bear; I have to wonder if the producers know what they're doing.

Alison and Kevin Webster
Naomi Radcliffe and Michael Le Vell
I'd like to say thank you to the writers of Coronation Street for the excellent script writing this week and to these two actors for their superb acting.
Even though Alison and Kevin are two fictional characters living on a fictional street in a fictional part of England, yesterday morning, they were part of my family. My heart ached for them and then, at the last scene, my heart broke.
