Bonus
Questions: In class on November 18 we will be discussing
"Animal Magnetism and Hypnotism" (p. 76-83 in the coursepack). I always ask
questions in class, but on this occasion I will give you advance warning of five specific
questions that I plan to ask (listed below). Think about them in advance and have ready a
short (30 second to 1 minute) answer to one or more of them. If you respond when I ask one
of these questions in class then you will earn 5 bonus marks on the Christmas test.
Remember, there might be several people offering to answer a particular question. So even
though I might accept the complementary responses of a couple you can't expect to have one
answer ready to be guaranteed a bonus. If you have several ready, though, I'm sure you
will. Some of the questions are based purely upon the reading but two require at least
some background thinking. In sum, be ready with a response to a few of the questions and
if you do respond in class then you'll receive the bonus marks (just give me your name
after class and I'll record it immediately).
How would Franz Anton Mesmer (the origin of Mesmerism or
Animal Magnetism) explain what went on in the Calcutta Native Hospital in the
1840's?
The theory of animal magnetism got caught up in the power
politics of science during the 19th century. What role did gender play in that
situation?
Is it accurate to say that the role of animal magnetizers
in alleviating pain was made obsolete by the introduction of more effective and scientific
techniques of modern anaesthetics?
Have you ever been hypnotized? If so then describe the experience.
Almost everyone these days has seen someone hypnotized. Can
you summarize the standard procedure/explanation of hypnotism?
Note: students can earn up to 10 bonus marks on the Christmas
test from responding to this question and/or the question
on the previous topic. |
