WORKSHOPS LIST
- Monday, Sept. 14/98 1-3 pm at Menelik Hall
--- Sculpting Porcelain Clay -- Rose Gniewek -- Adult class
- Rose Gniewek is a certified ceramics teacher with 11 years experience in hand-building, pinch pots, figurine sculpting, and on the wheel. She apprenticed with Helen Dowell.
The workshop covers sculpting clay, with emphasis on the methods and having creative fun with clay.
Materials needed: a rolling pin, a butter knife, small piece of cloth (to keep the clay from sticking to the counter)
- Tuesday, Sept. 15/98 1-3 pm at Holy Redeemer Parish Center
--- Ukrainian Egg Decoration -- Tanya Wilson -- age 13 and up
- Tanya Wilson has been decorating eggs since she was five and has been an instructor for 3 years in Ukrainian Egg Decoration.
The workshop will cover the history of Ukrainian Egg Decoration, dyes and tools
used and how you can create your own beautifully decorated egg.
Materials needed: 2 eggs at room temperature, Not boiled.

--- Bunka Embroidery -- Phyllis Kirkpatrick -- Adult class
- Phyllis Kirkpatrick has 15 years experience in Bunka Embroidery. She teaches with County Recreation Dept and throughout Cape Breton.
Bunka Embroidery is a delicate Japanese embroidery, done with rayon thread and a punch needle. The workshop will cover its history, supplies and tools used, and how you can create exciting embroidery.
Materials Needed: small pair of pointed, sharp scissors; a small, simple picture you would like to work on.

--- Creating with COREL -- Sharen MacPherson -- youth workshop
- Sharen MacPherson studied Graphic Design at Holland College, PEI, worked in Ottawa, has had a free-lance business for 5 years and is an instructor at Marconi Campus.
This session will feature discussion about the COREL software and general principles on creating art with software. Students will work on an interesting project to use the principles.
Students can enroll in either of the two sessions.
- Thursday, Sept 17/98 1-3 pm at Whitney Pier Memorial Jr. High
--- Photography -- Grant Young -- age 15 and up
- Grant Young trained at Dawson College for two years and a commercial photographer by trade. He has his own business and is a specialist in black and white photography.
This workshop will be centered around discussion of exposure (a common cause of poor photographs). Questions are welcome - Camera is needed, without film in it.

--- Caricature -- Ron Evely -- age 13 and up
- Ron Evely is a self-taught artist; he has been producing editorial and political cartoons since 1990. He has a small business in graphic design. His recently completed book is a collection of Cape Breton Political Cartoons.
Caricature is done by exaggerating a portrait, yet retaining the resemblance for comic effect. Topics being covered include: face construction, proportion; caricature profile; and perspective.
Materials Needed: pencils, erasers, a 12" ruler, a 6" ruler.

--- Mi'kmaq Chants and Dance -- The Denny Family --
- The Denny Family has been performing for 30 years, passing down traditional Mi'kmaq chants and dances. They've preformed in Europe and across Canada. They were also nominated for an award at the East Coast Music Awards.
This one hour performance will include traditional and contemporary Mi'kmaq chants and songs and provide interesting background information.

--- East Indian Dance -- Manjula Banerjee --
- Manjula Banerjee has an extensive background in Indian Dance and has been teaching dance and performing for over 10 years.
Her performance will include Indian folk dance, semi-classical dance, and playing on the sitar.
