Social Science Research
When the certificate program in social research methods began, Dean Arthur Tucker called it “an especially welcome addition to the array of educational opportunities” at the university.
"Applied social research is growing by leaps and bounds. Trained researchers are in great demand," says sociologist John deRoche.
This five-course program (30 credits) includes hands-on experience in a range of research methods, grounded in basic social-science concepts and issues. It emphasizes surveys, computerized data analysis, and the increasingly popular qualitative strategies (such as in-depth interviewing, in-person observation, and focus groups). In the final course, each student will complete an independent research project under the supervision of an experienced faculty researcher.
Students enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program can easily fit the certificate requirements into a BA, BACS, or BBA without needing extra credits, and so can enhance their access to the many careers that utilize social research skills.
The certificate is also available outside a degree program, for people who want to acquire or upgrade research skills useful in their current jobs.
